Armed with Upright Bass, Fiddle, Guitar, Harmonicas, bass drum, washboard, and sibling harmonies, they make a lot of noise, and you should too… Just be careful not to crack a heel.

A Mission favorite!

Although The Steepwater Band got their start as devotees of delta blues, they have since been expanding on their musical influences taking on everything from psychedelia to Americana, and of course, hardhitting rock and roll. Formed in Chicagoin 1998, the band’s signature sound is at once a nod to earlier rock n’ blues combined with a raw and gusty musical approach. Band members Jeff Massey (guitar & vocals), Tod Bowers (bass) and Joe Winters (drums) have a synergy that comes from years of playing together. The rhythm section is taut and responsive; they flourish to create a perfect canvass. This sonic foundation laid by Bowers & Winters leaves the space for the guitars to soar and vocals to shine. Massey performs with a passion that can belie his virtuosity, while always being true the song at hand.

The band’s infectious energy is equally evident in their live performances, as critics and fans hail their shows as forceful and intoxicating. It is their humble devotion to music, and a commitment to achieving their musical goals without compromising the integrity of their musical vision that make The Steepwater Band such a refreshing find. In 2010, the band released highly lauded live record entitled “Live at the Double Door” which contained tracks from their previous two LPs, “Revelation Sunday (2006)” and “Grace and Melody (2008).”

The Steepwater Band’s latest studio release, “CLAVA”
(pronounced CLAY-va) finds the band hitting their most creative and focused point of their careers. The new record was recorded this past March on the South Side of Chicago at the studio of the same name. Also known as a trinity of stars, CLAVA is a fitting name for the new record produced by the trio along with Colin Sipos, a young, up-and-coming producer/ engineer who has worked with the critically acclaimed Iron & Wine and Califone. Sipos also recorded TSB’s “The Stars Look Tonight/My Back Pocket (2010)” single and mixed “Live at the Double Door (2010).” The ten new songs feature some of their most blues-infused, heavy and psychedelic tunes to date. Each song takes you on a musical journey, steeped in tradition, while not being overly nostalgic. On “CLAVA” the band honors their heroes and pays them the highest compliment – continuing the Rock n’ Roll lineage while creating paths not yet explored. This release exemplifies the musical trinity that is The Steepwater Band.

For nearly 20 years I’ve been providing audiences with what I call “progressive blues with funk”; drawing inspiration from such artists as Howling Wolf and Taj Mahal, Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan, and Sean Costello and Johnny Lang. I’ve performed on stages from Pittsburg, Kansas to Abilene, Texas. Some of my most memorable performances have included sharing a stage with Debbie D and The Destroyers and making an appearance with The Juke Joint Allstars at the Kings Palace on Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee.

For the Winter/Spring 2012 Tour, Todd Day Wait is being joined by Midwest harmonica slinger Paul Weber and Arizona journeyman Matt Dethrow on upright bass. Playing folk-country-blues, their travels will take them on a two-month, 10-state tour through the Southwest, the South, the Midwest, the Mountain states and back out to the West Coast. The trio just recorded a little E.P. out in California, all on their own reel-to-reel machine and shot a music video before leaving on their Winter/Spring tour. You can find out where they are currently by looking at their calendar and see where they are heading next.

Since 2009, Todd Day Wait has been touring full-time–taking up residencies all across America—all the while traveling in an eco-friendly airport shuttle bus that runs off of used vegetable oil. During these residencies his main group is Todd Day Wait’s Pigpen, which is comprised of a rotating line-up of professional musicians who write, record and perform Rhythm & Blues-Folk and Soul-Rock & Roll. His residencies focus on New Orleans, the Midwest and the West Coast where he performs in The Golden Hills Blues Band. Wait fronts an acoustic side as well during these residencies playing Folk-Country-Blues as a solo artist, with a trio or as Wait & Weber.

In 2009, Pigpen recorded in various cites including a single called “Magnolia Trees” in San Diego, CA and the track “Nowhere to Be” in Flagstaff, AZ. They also started to blaze a trail along the road map that became their regular touring circuit.

Their extensive touring found them living in California throughout the second half of 2010 after spending the winter in New Orleans. As a result, they were afforded the opportunity to record new music in California, Arizona, Missouri and Louisiana. Expanding their fan base city to city, they embarked upon a Spring Midwest tour of 30 dates and a Fall Midwest tour of 14 dates including a spot at the Schwagstock Music Festival.

In 2011, Todd Day Wait recorded and released a solo album and a full band E.P. on the west coast before returning to New Orleans for his five-week residency. He then launched his Spring Midwest tour in March, extending through May, while dispersing these two new records and an Acoustic Duo E.P featuring Harmonica player Paul Weber. Wait earned himself national spots at the 101 Music Festival, Tall Tree Music Festival and the Roots n Blues n BBQ Music Festival.

The feel-good blues song “I Sure Love You” makes a great dedication song to someone close and “Peaches” tells the story of a marveling traveling wanderer. The overdriven, psych-tinged jump boogie of “It’s the Same Old Thing” roars out of the gate with raunchy distorted organ and woozy wah-wah guitar building foundations for Wait’s powerful bluesman vocals. Pigpen is beyond a musical sensation as their lyrics paint optimistic pictures of a caring society such as in “The World Today.” It’s music with heart that injects positive spirit into the world.

Todd Day Wait is currently on his winter tour, which includes his New Orleans winter residency and then launching his cross-country spring tour.

Ben Green is a Deep Roots Blues songwriter with an original slide guitar style. For nearly twenty years, Ben has performed as a solo artist & has become a favorite among his listeners.

At first glance, it may appear that Jordan Thomas doesn’t fit the picture of a traditional bluesman. Clean-cut and even-tempered, Thomas certainly doesn’t seem to have the blues. That is, until you see and hear him play. From the first snap of his guitar strings, Thomas’s blue soul comes alive, reaching out and grabbing every audience with the sincerity and authenticity of a blues all his own.

Jordan’s blue soul was cultivated early, with a childhood immersed in music due to his mother’s singing in a southern gospel quartet. He began teaching himself guitar at age ten, spurred by a desire to play like Chuck Berry. Knowing that Berry had been heavily influenced by blues artists like Muddy Waters, Jordan began frequenting the local library’s blues section. Album by album, Jordan began soaking up the sounds of Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Howlin’ Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson, and of course Robert Johnson. Entirely self-taught, his driving finger-style acoustic guitar playing is every bit as powerful as that of the blues masters from whose records he learned. Likewise, his slide playing is virtuosic and passionate, full of raw energy yet precise and clear.

Having also become an avid poet and songwriter, Jordan takes particular interest in applying poetic techniques to traditional blues forms. Thomas’s passion for vivid imagery and subtle wordplay is evident in his lyricism, which melds perfectly with his soulful, emotion-soaked singing style. Thomas considers himself part of the “new generation” of blues harp players, playing fully chromatically on a standard diatonic harmonica through advanced bending and overblow techniques. It’s clear from his playing, however, that he applies these relatively modern techniques with the pure feeling and energy central to traditional blues.

In 2007, Jordan formed the electric four piece blues band The Mojo Roots, with whom he continues to perform regularly. Meanwhile, his career as a solo artist is burgeoning rapidly, playing stripped-down acoustic blues in venues across Missouri. He continues to write prolifically and is currently recording his first full-length album as a solo artist.
